NOTES

The source data is the WCPFC Regional Observer Programme (ROP) Database;
There is some backlog of data yet to be provided and processed, mainly for 2021 and 2022;
The WCPFC Data rules related to the dissemination of WCPFC data in the public domain have been applied; that is, summarized data representing the activities of less than three vessels have been removed;
Where the observed capture rate is ‘0.000000’ but the number of captures is greater than zero (0), this means that the capture rate is smaller than the significant figures provided in this table (i.e. <0.0000005). This also applies to the observed mortality rates and number of mortalities;
The sum of the mortalities and live releases will often not equal the captures (i.e. interactions with the gear) since the observer (for one reason or the other) may not have recorded the FATE and the CONDITION of every encounter;
For the purse seine fishery prior to 2017, information on the condition of the landed and released catch (e.g. mortalities) were collected by observers on the GEN-2 form only which did not align to the set information so obtaining a valid mortality rate was not  possible. The need for a link between the GEN-2 form and the PS-3 form was highlighted by Clarke and Gilman (2015) and was subsequently been agreed by the Commission (Anon, 2015). The change on forms to rectify this issues was undertaken in 2016 and subsequently implemented from mid-2017.  The historical PS-3 data were also updated using the link to the GEN-2 form (at the set level) to include the condition (life status), so this issue is now resolved.
Latitude is in decimal degrees and represents the midpoint of the 5° latitude cell. Positive values are for the northern hemisphere and negative values are for the southern hemisphere;
Longitude is in decimal degrees and represents the midpoint of the 5° Longitude cell. Positive values are for the eastern hemisphere and negative values are for the western hemisphe
Bird species, as reported at the national level, are sometimes inconsistent with reporting by other countries and the FAO ASFIS species list, and so we have attemtped to retain the original species identification (as reported at the country level).
Purse seine interactions may include a few instances where the animal was outside the encircled net but was included as a 'gear interaction' by the observer.  It is not possible to differentiate these records at this stage
The capture/interaction rates presented herein are nominal rates, and so may differ from rates determined from models and presented in SC bycatch estimates papers.
Observer data have been provided to SPC for areas outside the WCPFC Area, but these tables are based on observer data for the WCPFC Area only.
Coverage corresponds to the observer data processed (or imported), including accepted for quality control, and may differ to observer coverage reported elsewhere which includes data received but not processed or imported.
Total effort for the Longline fishery in 2020 is provisional mainly due to the lags in receiving data due to the impacts of COVID.
