WCPFC Secretariat welcomes new staff member
The Executive Director of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC), Andrew Wright, today welcomed the newest member of the WCPFC Secretariat's staff to its headquarters offices at Pohnpei in Federated States of Micronesia. An eminent Japanese tuna scientist, Dr. Ziro Suzuki, has been appointed to the position of Japan Trust Fund (JTF) Coordinator with the Commission. Dr Suzuki's responsibilities principally concern the implementation of a US$2 million trust fund provided by the Government of Japan to support capacity building in the fisheries sector in Pacific Island countries over the next four years. It will target Pacific island efforts to develop their capacities to collect data from WCPO tuna fisheries, monitor the status of fisheries in the region and develop and implement regulatory arrangements to improve efforts to conserve and manage regional tuna resources. Dr Suzuki will also provide logistical support to the Commission's Northern Committee which is responsible for advising the Commission on conservation and management arrangements for tuna and billfish stocks that occur in the North Pacific Ocean.
