United Nations (UN) successfully concluded the Seventeenth Round of Informal Consultations of States Parties (ICSP-17) to the Fish Stocks Agreement.
The United Nations (UN) successfully concluded the Seventeenth Round of Informal Consultations of States Parties (ICSP-17) to the Fish Stocks Agreement from 15 to 17 May 2024 at its Headquarters in New York City. This year’s consultations, organized by the Division of Ocean Affairs and Law of the Sea (DOALOS), focused on "Sustainable fisheries management in the face of climate change." The event brought together UN members, observers, NGOs, and IGOs to discuss the implementation of the Agreement, share experiences, and identify best practices. The WCPFC Secretariat contributed a paper and served as panelists, presenting insights on the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission's (WCPFC) experience and perspective in relation to sustainable fisheries management in the face of climate change.
In line with General Assembly (GA) resolution 78/68, ICSP-17 aimed to improve understanding of the challenges climate change poses to sustainable fisheries management. The meeting highlighted cooperative efforts and shared knowledge to ensure the conservation of straddling and highly migratory fish stocks at the national and regional levels. This annual consultation underscores the global commitment to protecting marine resources through regional and international collaboration. Next year’s focused topic of discussion by this group will be decided by the UNGA in September 2024.
